6 Things to Look Forward to in East Lothian this Summer

April 4th, 2018

As it’s such gloomy weather at the moment, we’re daydreaming about warmer, sunnier days. Fingers crossed we’ll get a good summer! When you’re taking a break from work, here are a few of the best events and things to look forward to in East Lothian and Edinburgh this summer.

Life & Style

Edinburgh’s most stylish event is back for its second year, and this time it’s bigger and better than ever. Taking place on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th May, Life & Style offers a jam-packed programme of fashion, beauty and style events. There’s an exciting line-up of speakers on the Lifestyle Stage (including celebrity hair stylist Jason Collier, star skincare expert Charlotte Connoley and fashion director Wendy Rigg) as well as a whole host of workshops to try your hand at a new skill. Shake up a drink in the cocktail masterclasses with Badger & Co and Element, learn calligraphy with Laila Lettering or arrange the perfect bouquet with florists, Snapdragon.

There will be plenty of other things going on throughout the venue (the stunning Royal Society of Edinburgh on George Street) including express mini makeovers and manicures, a fashion show, the Interior Trends Room and much more. We’re looking forward to getting glammed up and finding out all about this year’s top style trends!

Canteen

Canteen, a fantastic street food festival organised by Rogue Village, is back this summer. Held in Archerfield Walled Garden in East Lothian, Canteen will be happening on the last Saturday of every month throughout the summer. The traders and entertainment changes every month, but you’re guaranteed to get great street food, enjoy live music and resident DJs and soak up the family-friendly festival atmosphere.

Previous traders have included Shrimpwreck, Harajuku Kitchen, Meat Stack, The Crema Caravan, Umami Spice Girl, Pizza Geeks, Bostock Bakery and lots more. We can’t wait to go back and tuck into some of our favourite street food dishes, as well as meet some new traders and enjoy a great day out.

Midstock Festival

If you’re looking for a great family day out in East Lothian this summer, you can’t go wrong with Midstock Festival. It’s a great music festival held in Dalkeith Country Park, and this year it’s on from 31st August to 1st September. Dubbed Scotland’s “biggest small festival”, the weekend includes plenty of entertainment for all ages.

There’s lots of family fun during the day, and headline acts in the evening for music-lovers. There’s a funfair, plenty of street food vendors, bars and fringe entertainers, plus lots more. This year’s line up includes 2 Unlimited, Ian Van Dahl, Example, The Darkness, Ash, Mauro Picotto and lots more to be announced.

One music festival not enough for you? Don’t worry, Dalkeith Country Park are also hosting the Sunday Sessions festival this summer! The one-day music festival will take place on 24th June and includes lots of top indie and rock artists, performing in the beautiful surroundings of the park.

The Sunday Sessions line-up includes headliners like the Kaiser Chiefs, Pete Doherty and the Happy Mondays, as well as plenty of other acts such as the Lightning Seeds, Feeder, British Sea Power and the Sugar Hill Gang. The festival is also family-friendly, and there will be plenty of entertainment for the kids – including circus workshops, face painting, crafts, funfair and children’s entertainers.

Royal Highland Show

One of Scotland’s most iconic events, the Royal Highland Show is back this summer for its 178th year. On from 21st to 24th June at the Royal Highland Centre, Ingliston, the event showcases the very best of Scottish farming, food and rural life. There’s plenty of traditional entertainment, live music and kids activities as well as classic events like the Grand Parade.

Our favourite part of the Royal Highland Show is Scotland’s Larder Live, which showcases the best food and drink Scotland has to offer. It’s a must-visit for keen foodies. There’s lots of fresh produce and artisan treats from local vendors in the marketplace, plus there are live demonstrations, tastings and talks in the Cookery Theatre from top chefs and producers.

Luna Cinema

We’re hoping the weather’s good when the Luna Cinema returns to Edinburgh this summer. The outdoor cinema will be popping up at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh from 31st August to 2 September, giving you the chance to enjoy the silver screen and the great outdoors at the same time.

The films being shown include cult classic The Goonies, and newer releases The Greatest Showman and The Shape of Water. Pack your picnic blanket and plenty of snacks, then pick the perfect spot on the grass to enjoy the movie on the big screen.
