How your management style can develop your team, and your business

These groups of people work together day in and day out to create their product and order the best possible service they can to their clients. This can be a difficult task as work can become demanding and tiring. Difficulties may arise in the work place or conflicts may amount. However, never worry, as we are here to supply those of you in charge with the best possible ways to avoid these issues.

As manager, the duty of peacekeeping must lie with you. This must begin with self-identification of how you want your office to feel, the relationship you want to have with your colleagues and the objectives of your business. There are 7 managerial methods proven to be generally applied throughout all work places. This is of key importance, as your approach must match the general feel of the work place, and satisfy the needs of your staff. So, which is your preferred style?

Firstly, we have the authoritarian method. This style involves absolute control over decision-making and authority. It requires definite roles and hierarchy within the workplace. This style has previously been proven to create positive results as each employee knows their role within the organisation. However, when applied in extreme measures, this style can create a very negative feel among workers, as they may feel unimportant or undervalued.

In a slightly different approach, some managers choose to take a visionary approach. These leaders focus on motivation of employees in order to keep the team on track and moving in the correct direction. This can be beneficial, as it encourages staff to feel part of a team as they work together in order to reach common goals.

A transactional management style uses rewards as a means of motivating staff. These rewards may include bonuses or holidays. This works well in the short term, for example, after a hard push to meet a deadline, however problems may arise in the long-term application as they are not financially sustainable for most companies.

Some choose to participate in servant leadership management styles. Here, the manager takes on the role of mentor or coach, encouraging their team and helping them progress in their personal achievements. Problems may arise from this in the case of unmotivated staff, however generally this can be well accepted in the work space, as employees are able to improve their quality of work while creating positive relations with managers.

A manager who undertakes a pace-setting role chooses to set an example for their employees.  They lead from the front and expect the rest to follow, in doing so high standards are set in an attempt to motivate staff to gain the best possible results. This can be beneficial within a workplace when a big goal is trying to be reached; it creates healthy competition and motivates staff, however if implemented too strictly in the long term, staff may become exhausted or frustrated, as they feel they are being pushed too hard.

The democratic style is commonly implemented in independent businesses, however is also often used in larger set-ups. This supplies all employees with a chance to share their ideas, encouraging ‘out of the box’ thinking and can,through acceptance of all ideas, result in a better end product than if one person was to decide alone. This helps employees feel valued and appreciated within a workplace, as well as encouraging innovative thinking and creative ideas.

Finally, the lesser-known laissez-faire management style allows staff complete control and freedom over their work. In a team of highly-skilled and motivated individuals, this can be hugely beneficial, as employees feel valued at work while being able to work creatively as they wish. However, this is less frequently implemented in workplaces, as it leaves the result to chance and could end in a poor result with serious consequences for the company.

Although each individual is different and no one company the same, it is beneficial to look at similar enterprise and figure out what worked for them, because it may work for you too! So, whether you want to be a hands-on leader or give your staff a little space, through identification of your methods, you can tailor them to best suit those around you in the work place.
