One of our Eskmills tenants, When You Wish Upon A Star, is an amazing organisation helping to make dreams come true for sick children. Their Scottish office receives lots of magical wish requests from brave and inspirational children every year.
Many of the wishes this year are from our own community of Edinburgh and the Lothians, so When You Wish Upon A Star are inviting Eskmills tenants to become a Wish Granter for a child who is aged between 2-16 and living with a life threatening or terminal illness.
One of their biggest fundraising events is the Arctic Wish Trek. Participants get the opportunity to take part in a once in a lifetime experience, at the same time as raising money and making a child’s dreams come true. The Arctic Wish Trek has been running for over 25 years and holds a special place in the hearts of many staff, fundraisers, families and children.
Each December, the team organise a trip for up to 100 children and their families on the Santa Express Flight to Lapland in search of the real Father Christmas. In order to fund the trip, the charity invites people to take part in the Arctic Wish Trek to raise money so the most deserving children can swap their hospital beds for sleigh rides.
Get a taste for what you can expect from the trip by watching the Youtube video below.
On the trek, you’ll head to Rovaniemi in Finland and spend three days trekking into the Arctic Circle. The trek isn’t for the faint-hearted (you’ll be battling sub-zero temperatures, sleeping in tents, and pulling your own equipment!) but the team will make sure you have plenty of training before you set off. The challenge will push you to your limits, but you’ll get an amazing sense of achievement, see a magical part of the world and help children who are in need. It even includes a celebratory meal and night’s stay in the Arctic Snow Hotel at the end of the trek – which is an amazing experience in itself!
You’ll need plenty of strength, stamina and determination as trekkers walk approximately 20-30km per day. But how many people can say they’ve walked to the Arctic Circle under the Northern Lights? Not many! And the money raised by trek participants goes straight towards making children’s wishes come true.
Judith King, When You Wish Upon A Star’s Scottish Fundraising Assistant, says: “We believe every child deserves to smile and with every Wish pound that is raised we will be in a position to grant the most magical Wishes. Wishes allow our families to put their child’s illness on hold and enjoy what promises to be a time which will create the most magical memories through what is an exceptionally difficult time in their lives, never knowing what the future will bring or sadly for some children a time where they have such precious little time left.”
Fancy taking part in the 2019 Arctic Wish Trek? Sign up and start fundraising now! Each trek member must raise a minimum sponsorship of £3,200 so the sooner you can start fundraising, the better.
