We’ve got lots of amazing businesses here at Eskmills, so we wanted to highlight some of them in our Meet the Tenant series. Every couple of weeks, we’ll be sitting down with a different business to find out more about them and why they’ve chosen Eskmills for their office.
First up is one of our newest tenants, Hood Magazine! They’re a brand new women’s lifestyle magazine. The first free, national magazine of its kind, it’s distributed all across Scotland from right here at Eskmills. They’ve just released their third issue, so it seemed like the perfect time for a Q&A to find out more about the business.
Can you tell us what Hood Magazine is all about?
Hood is a magazine written by working women, for working women. We want to highlight all the amazing things going on in Scotland, as well as focus on the cool things women are doing here. There’s fashion, beauty, food and drink, travel, interiors, what’s on and lots more to delve into each month. A new issue is released at the start of every month, and is available to pick up in galleries, shopping centres, attractions, airports and train stations, as well as 54 Marks & Spencer stores across Scotland.
When did Hood Magazine move into Eskmills, and what made you choose here?
Our parent company, Miller Mitchell Media, were already based in Eskmills, so it made sense to stay here when the idea for the magazine came about. We’ve been here for over two years now, and initially chose Eskmills because of the great location. Our director lives in Musselburgh and our editor is out in North Berwick, so this is the perfect place for us – the commute is nice and short, and it takes no time at all to get into Edinburgh city centre for meetings and events.
What does a typical day look like at your office?
Busy! We’re a small team and launching a magazine is no easy feat, so there’s always lots going on. The editorial team are usually working on writing up articles for both the print magazine and online, and the partnerships team spend a lot of time chatting to advertisers and potential sponsors. We also organise reader events, liaise with our columnists, stay up to date with our social media channels and – of course – drink plenty of cups of tea. We attend a lot of events and meetings to find out what’s going on and discover new product launches too, so at least one of us is usually off out at some point during the day or in the evening.
What’s your favourite thing about working at Eskmills?
It’s lovely to have some peace and quiet, which you don’t get if you’re based in the city centre. When we’re on deadline and just have a day or two to bring the whole magazine together before it goes to the printer, it can get pretty stressful! It’s nice to be able to step out of the office for ten minutes and go for a walk along the River Esk to take a break.
What exciting things are coming up for Hood Magazine in 2019?
We’ve been delighted with the reaction we’ve had since launching our first issue in October, and every issue since then has been even bigger and better. We hope this is going to continue in 2019 and Hood will soon become a household name in Scotland. We’re excited to start planning lots of reader events, work with some amazing advertisers and bring the best life and style content to the women of Scotland.
